The Berrien County Mathematics and Science Center, a program
of the Berrien Regional Education Service Agency (Berrien RESA),
serves a 675 square-mile area in southwestern Michigan along
50 miles of Lake Michigan's white sand beach. The mission of
the Berrien County Mathematics and Science Center is to enhance
the quality of mathematics and science education for all area
students.
Since 1991, some of the area's highest-potential high school
students have attended Berrien County Mathematics and Science
Center for challenge and inspiration in mathematics, science,
and technology. Up to 30 students per grade in grades 9-12 travel
to the campus of Andrews University
in Berrien Springs for half
of each school day to take accelerated mathematics, science,
and technology classes. Students receive high school and optional
college credit for these courses, taught by Andrews University
faculty.
The Center along with the BCISD Professional Development Consortium
has on staff two consultants in the areas of mathematics and science education. The Center provides services to local school districts in the areas of professional development, curriculum support, student services, leadership, community involvement, and resource materials. and Science Center Network. The Network supports the delivery
of high quality mathematics and science education for all students
in Michigan. The Center is also a member of the National
Consortium of Specilized Secondary Schools for Mathematics,
Science and Technology (NCSSSMST).
